Things that make you go - what?

Today, the Houston Chronicle had a first. It was the first day that the front page did NOT have an article about Obama. At least, since the ordination. :)

In fact, the headlines were
  • Life in the Faster Lane - revamped Katy Freeway.
  • Lykos Makes Testing of DNA Mandatory - Houston DA sets new policy that states "will require prosecutors to test DNA in every case where it is available and relevant". Gee, how will they know it's relevant.
  • Forbes adds an alleged kingpin to billionaire list - Big drug boss makes Forbes Listing. Now we know how to become a billionaire.
  • 2nd person sought in killing - Nice. So, go find him.
  • Complaints on rise at institutions for disabled - Mentally-disabled institutions forcing residents into brawls.
But the big picture and big story was IS FUTURE IN THE CARDS? The front page of this liberal Houston newspaper was about the demise of the card game, Bridge. Gee, who plays Bridge anymore? I mean, I spent some time in Las Vegas and never saw a single game of Bridge at any of the Casinos. Of course, I should have hit some of the more low-brow establishments and I may have found an illegal game somewhere. But the fact that this card game isn't very attractive to the new generation shouldn't mean that it makes Front Page News in Houston.

I mean, seriously, who gives a damn about whether or not Bridge disappears? All I can say is that Houston Chronicle correspondant Moises Mendoza needs to get out more and find a more interesting topic to write about. Need some help, Moises? How about the Houston economy? Or the devastating drought in Texas? Or how about the fact that Houston's city government has de facto encouraged illegal immigrants to flock to this city and now Mayor White complains about the federal government's enforcement of the immigration code?

Sometimes, I wonder.

  1. Aren't you a little weary of seeing the news media focus on problems instead of solutions?

    I know I am.

    What we focus on expands.

But that's just my opinion. What do I know?
